Un arbre de taille moyenne au feuillage plumeux, originaire de l'Afrique tropicale mais qui est aujourd'hui largement cultivé dans le monde entier pour son fruit produisant une pulpe aigre-douce populaire pour de nombreuses utilisations. C'est également un arbre d'ornement très apprécié et qui peut même être formé comme un bonsaï.
