This beautiful, slim, and elegant Madagascan palm with clustered leaflets and a slender trunk makes a perfect pot plant when young, and does well in the tropical or subtropical garden when older. One curiosity of this species is that it starts out with wispy leaves and a pencil-thin trunk that swells up massively to about 5cm (2in) in diameter. And when over 6ft tall it supports a neat crown of elegantly arching, plumose leaves.
